June 5th saw the empty acres at Union Corners come alive with “Boombox the Wasteland,” a neighborhood party that grew from local music producer/WORT volunteer Wendy Schneider’s simple idea that Eastsiders shouldn’t wait development of the lot before making use of it.

WORT broadcast a soundtrack geared to the afternoon’s entertainment, including New Orleans-style marching music, beats for the breakdancers, and accompaniment for performances by members of the Natyarpana Dance Troupe and others. Information about the East Side History Club was available at the table of the Isthmus Neighborhood Planning Council. Hundreds of people stopped by the event, leaving suggestions for development of the site before moving on to feast on ice cream, lemonade, and picnic fare while enjoying the sights and sounds.
