Meeting Sept. 19 – “Fill ’er up!”

Posted by eastsidehistorymadison on September 9, 2009

If you remember saying those words, then you’ll enjoy the East Side History Club’s September meeting, Saturday Sept. 19th, 2–4 pm, at the Goodman Community Center, 149 Waubesa St.

321-t1

We’ll spin through history in our automobiles with Jim Draeger and Mark Speltz.

These local historians’ book Fill ’er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations (Places Along the Way), was published by Wisconsin Historical Society Press in late 2008.

Like their book, Draeger and Speltz’ presentation will trace the history of these ubiquitous and often quirky buildings, and share the stories of the people who ran these stations. Come for a glimpse into the glory days of gas stations, when a visit meant service with a smile, a windshield wash, and the cheerful question, “Fill ’er up?”

Special guests will include local people with ties to the East Side’s automotive past. Bring your own auto memorabilia to share.

$2 suggested donation.
